Nigel H. Croft, Chair of the Board

Nigel Croft has been actively involved in Quality Management since 1974, when he began his career in the British steel industry as a student apprentice. Among his many professional activities, Nigel has held senior management positions and served as non-executive board member of a number of commercial and non-profit organizations in the quality and sustainability arena. He currently Chairs the ISO Technical Sub-committee TC176/SC2, responsible for the ISO 9001 and ISO 9004 Quality standards.

He was a member of the FLOCERT Supervisory Board in Bonn from 2010 – 2016, serving as its Chair from 2012-2016, and a Member of the Board of SAAS (Social Accountability Accreditation Services) in New York, from 2010 – 2017. Nigel is a quality and sustainability consultant for the United Nations Industrial Development Organization, and an Adjunct Professor of Quality Management at the College of Business, University of Northern Malaysia.

Melanie Landthaler, Vice-Chair of the Board

Melanie began working on coffee sustainability in 2008 with the 4C Association, a baseline coffee sustainability standard. She later joined green coffee merchant ECOM Trading as Sustainability Manager in Indonesia, responsible for building the company’s Arabica supply chains with an emphasis on productivity and quality, as well as on improving the livelihoods of over 6,000 smallholder farmers. In 2013, she moved back to Europe to take up a job with the UN International Trade Centre in Geneva (WTO/UNCTAD), where she focused on fostering sustainable trade and SME competitiveness in developing countries.

A freelance consultant since 2014, Melanie supports clients on different social sustainability issues. She developed the Global Gender Equality Strategy 2017–2020 for Nespresso’s AAA Program, which works with 75,000 coffee farmers in 12 countries, and managed the development and field testing of the AAA Gender Assessment Tool for smallholder coffee farmers.

Melanie holds a Master Degree in Southeast Asian Studies from the University of Bonn as well as an IPA in Gender and Social Inequality from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) at the University of London.

David Clayton-Smith, Member of the Board

David Clayton-Smith is Chairman of Kent, Surrey & Sussex Academic Health Science Network responsible for pulling together health science/tech commercial and academic partners to work with the National Health Service to develop and spread innovation in health and social care whilst supporting wealth creation in the UK.

He also Chairs East Sussex Healthcare NHS trust which operates Eastbourne and Hastings General Hospitals and community Services, the Trust employs 6000+David spent 25 years in senior board commercial roles in the brewing industry and as a Board Director of three large UK Retailers including Boots and Halfords. He has also been Chair of MBO start-ups and UK listed media businesses.

He was Chair of The Fairtrade Foundation, in the UK for 6 yrs. and served on the International Board of Fairtrade based in Bonn.
He has held a number of Non-Executive Director roles in the commercial public and not for profit sectors, most recently as Chair of Thames Valley Housing operating 15,000 houses in the private rental and affordable housing sectors.

Michael von Luehrte, Member of the Board

He is a Senior Research Manager in Agricultural Commodities with considerable cross cultural and global experience. Not only he has proven track record of developing/integrating organizations as part of senior management teams and providing sound market price and fundamental forecasts as a basis for business decisions but also multiple cross commodity experience and in-depth market knowledge (grains & oilseeds, sugar/ethanol, coffee, cotton and cocoa).

Michael has accumulated several years of hands on experience of managing research people, processes across numerous geographies, and organizational talents. He has represented many companies in national and international organizations.
